CoCo

10/17/03 update

I just wanted to give little update on Coco. She has made incredible progress in the last week and especially in the last couple of days. When she first got here she would shake if I got close to her and would run away. She would only look at us from far away.

Little by little she has been allowing us to pet her. First under her chin only, then on top of her head and eventually her entire back and sometimes her belly. She is still uneasy about letting us pick her up and we try not to so that she feels safe. We want to do things only if she is ready and wants to. Now if we give attention to Trixie, our PMR baby(all the time :)) ) , Coco wants the attention also. She goes potty outside and rarely has an accident inside.

For the past week she has been sleeping on Jean's comfy Punkin beds. Last night she slept all night on our bed with the other babies for the first time. All on her own. I have little steps to the bed for her and she had taken a peak but had not dared to sleep with us until last night.

The biggest challenge with her has been getting her to drink water out of the bowl. I have tried different bowls and plates. I was ready to go tomorrow and buy a water bottle. Her biggest accomplishment... I saw her drink out of the water bowl today.

She is very sweet and now is barking a lot. She feels safe and wants to keep it that way here I guess. She is protecting the house for us!!

It has been a pleasure to see how much progress she has made in a little over a week. I am just so happy to see her turn around and sleep peacefully.

Subject:  Coco's vet visit with eye specialist

I took CoCo to the eye specialist today.  Her white spots on her eyes are a congenital problem.  They are little scars inside the cornea from when her eye was forming.  She has been like this since she was a pup.  There is nothing we can do for this but It should not affect her vision too much.  He said it is like having your glasses a little dirty.  She will be getting Cyclosporin drops on both eyes for dryness.  Will have a recheck in 4 weeks.

Coco is a sweet baby and is very hand shy.  Right now she is finally resting peacefuly.  Since she got here she lays on one of Jeans doughnut beds.  She seems to feel secure there.

Coco has spent her life in a MO puppy factory, she is now 8 years old and ready for a home of her own. Her little tongue sticks out some (lack of teeth). I have an appointment with the eye doctor tomorrow. From what I can see she does not appear to have cataracts. They appear to be corneal ulcers or scar tissue.

By the way, girls rule in this house. She is already following miss Trixie's foot steps. She has already been looking out the window from the top of my love seat.
