Megan's Story

PMR's Second Forever Foster

Megan has decided to extend her sabbatical.

The PMR Board has voted to allow Megan to join Lilli as a forever foster.  Megan will spend the rest of her retirement years as a Stroller Baby helping McKenna rule over Dallas.

Megan prefers to spend her days lounging about and likes to take evening strolls through the neighborhood.  She has agreed to consider occasional road trips to see grandparents, as long as we promise not to move her couch again.

While we do not discount Dr. Carroll's prognosis for Megan, we know better than to underestimate this little girl.  She has overcome incredible odds to become part of the PMR family and have this opportunity.  Without PMR and Leslie's amazing care, Megan wouldn't be with us today.  We look forward to loving and caring for Megan for years to come.

We don't know what the future holds for Megan, but we promise to do our best to make each day a happy day for Megan.  Thank you PMR for trusting enough to keep this special little girl

Update 6/1/06

Megan did well under anesthesia today.  The cyst is gone from her front left leg and, although she is licking the stitches a little now and then, it doesn't really seem to bother her too much and it looks pretty good.

Megan's heart is almost twice the size it should be and squeezes her trachea and leaves virtually no room for her lungs.  This is a big part of why she wheezes so much.  She can't get enough air.  Dr. Carroll started her on Clomipramine and Benazepril and said to continue to sedate her when we get storms.  We'll keep a close eye on her to see what changes the new meds bring about.  Hopefully, her breathing will get a little easier.

Dr. Carroll said that he honestly doesn't think Megan has more than another year left in her tired little body.  We're concentrating our efforts on quality of life right now and, as long as Megan gets what Megan wants, she is a pretty happy little girl.  She had a bad day yesterday and didn't sleep much last night.  She is better tonight.  She got her couch back, as well as the rest of the furniture.  She took some time to check placement and make sure we put everything back in the right place and then settled down for a snack.

She is resting quietly now and I'm hopeful that she has a restful night.

I don't see Megan leaving us.  She has had such a hard life and she just wants a quiet place to rest, belly rubs on demand and plenty of good food.  Oh yes, and a daddy who holds her close and gives her everything her little heart desires.

Thanks for keeping Megan in your thoughts today.

 Dana

Update 5/02/06

Megan is an 8 yr. old yorkie weighing about 8 lbs.  Megan is quiet and
spends much of her day resting quietly in a soft bed off to the side.
Megan enjoys morning stretching exercises and breakfast in bed.  She
likes to be brushed and loves belly rubs.  She comes up to ask for
attention and sit in you lap for a while, but usually prefers to sit quietly
near you rather than in your lap.  She does like to snuggle against my
legs at night, but not under the covers.

Megan has had a very hard life and has had to overcome many health
problems following her life in the mills.  She is a strong little girl, but
needs a peaceful life in her retirement years.  Megan only interacts
with a few of the other dogs in her foster home, and usually prefers
people to dogs, so she would do well as an only dog to a stay at home
family.  I call Megan my stealth baby because she likes to hide behind the
couch, but will suddenly appear in my lap seemingly out of nowhere.
Megan is very low maintenance and quiet, but she is also very determined.
She does not do well in a crate and will climb baby gates.  She
frightens easily at loud noises and is terrified of storms.  She navigates our
home well, but is developing cataracts, so she see mostly shadows but
not much else.  She does know her name and will follow the sound of your
voice to find you.

I'm not convinced that Megan is ready for adoption, but we would
consider a quiet home looking for a quiet companion.  Megan is very loving,
but not really playful.  She enjoys rides in the stroller, but doesn't
see well enough to be confident on walks through the neighborhood.  She
does enjoy a nice flower garden in a fenced yard with places to hide or
rest in the shade.  She is getting more comfortable with car rides, but
isn't really the adventurous type.

If you're looking for a playful puppy, Megan will not be a good fit,
but if you're looking for a quiet little girl who still has a lot of love
to give and is easy to please, Megan is all that and more.  As
mentioned before, Megan is terrified of storms, so if you live in an area that
gets lots of thunderstorms, Megan is not a good fit for you.  We would
have to decline an otherwise perfect family if they lived in an area
that gets frequent storms.  This is not a reflection of the applicant,
but rather an honest assessment of Megan's health and fear of storms and
loud noises.

I am happy to answer questions about Megan, but please take the time to
read her history before applying for her.  Megan has had enough of
hardship and it is our duty to see that she has nothing but peace and
contentment the rest of her life.  If you have questions about Megan, you
can e-mail her foster mom at
dana_bts@yahoo.org

Update 3/17/06

Meet Megan, a 7 1/2 pound beautiful Yorkie girl who is about 8 years old.  Megan has spent the past nine months overcoming heartworms, one last pregnancy, two hernias and mammary tumors.  With the help of her foster mom, Megan has put all that behind her, but her little body and her spirit are tired and still a little weak.  Megan is officially retired now and is taking a sabbatical.  It is time for Megan to concentrate on feeling better and learning to trust and enjoy her freedom.

Megan is terrified of storms.  Actually, most noises frighten Megan.  Rather than put her through another hurricane season, Megan was moved to another foster home to give her a quieter home with less inclement weather.  Megan is settling in nicely at her new home.  She is a my little stealth baby.  She quietly appears and disappears.  She gently nudges my leg to let me know she would like to be held, or if I'm sitting on the floor, she just appears in my lap.

I'm not sure Megan is ready for adoption at this time.  She has been through so much, and we would like to give her a chance to rest before moving her again.  But, we love her too much to not want the best for her.  If you feel that you can give Megan the perfect home, press her ADOPT button and submit an application.

Megan needs a very quiet home in a place with few or no thunder storms and lots of sunshine.  She likes to nap in a quiet corner on a soft bed and sometimes, if the weather is pretty and you can convince her there are no storms coming, she likes to go outside in the sunshine.  She gets along with the other dogs here, but doesn't interact with them a great deal, except that she seems drawn to McKenna.  She would do well as an only dog, or in a home with another dog or two if they were quiet like her.

Megan doesn't need to have her person with her every minute of the day, but she does need some company.  Who wants to spend their whole day in solitude?  Megan likes to sit on mom's lap and be gently stroked.  Megan loves to be brushed.  She likes to wear pretty bows in her hair, and she likes it when I take her hair down at night and scratch the top of her head.  She likes to snuggle at night, but sometimes she gets restless and will pace.  Megan needs a mommy who is patient about that.  She is always quiet, almost too quiet.  Megan is a good eater and isn't fussy about meal times, and she enjoys treats.

Megan is still nervous about her foster dad.  She will approach him for treats and food, but cautiously.  She gets braver if he is laying down in the bed.  She would be okay with a man in the house, but what she really needs is a mommy.  Megan is not demanding and has settled for far too little during her lifetime.  We're doing our best to spoil her and encourage her to ask for things.  She is beginning to get more assertive when asking to be held and petted, but Megan is subtle.

Megan isn't loud or fussy, and she doesn't come on strong.  But, this little girl with very quietly and very subtly and very thoroughly claim your heart.  Once she does, you will never want to let her go.  Megan is a keeper.

UPDATE 11/20/05

Hi,

My name is Megan, and I'm about 10 years old.  I weigh just 7 pounds and

FM says I'm very dainty...Its been a while since you last heard from me but I've been

busy having babies, (can you believe that at my age!) recovering from Heartworm treatments  and having a big surgery...now, I just have to have my dental, and I will be good as new...

FM calls me a true survivor 'cause I came through all that adversity like

a real trooper.  I don't have heartworms, I don't have cancer, and I don't

have to have babies...now I can kick back and enjoy my life...how great is that!!

I'm a pretty quiet girl who loves to be petted and loved.  I love to go outside,

and for a while I was always digging holes, but I haven't done that recently.

I need a fenced yard so I can go out and lay in the sun.  It would be nice to

have a sister or brother, but it really isn't necessary as long as my new parent/parents

pay alot of attention to me.  I wouldn't want to be left home alone by myself all

day.

I'm a little shy when I first meet someone new, but I warm up pretty quick if

you take time with me.  FM says I'm very sweet and would make a wonderful

companion for someone that wants a quiet, older lady.  I am not completely house-

broken.  You will have to watch me and let me outside at appropriate times.  I do

know to go outside...I'm just lazy sometimes.

I would love to have my forever home for Christmas...I have a lot of love to share... if

you think that you could love me just for who I am and not have too many expectations

of me, I promise I will make a great daughter.

 Love

Megan

Sean is ADOPTED

9/15/05 update

Just got back from picking Megan up...the vet put her on Temaril-P tablets for five days and then will reevaluate along with the other meds she is on...hopefully, this will help.  She absolutely wears herself out when she starts, not really coughing...more like trying to get something out of her throat...they took an xray of her throat and found nothing...   she is quieter on this new med...probably because it has prednisone in it.

She is sleeping now...

Sean had an enema...he was trying so hard to poop and the more he tried the more he cried...it was pitiful.  Hopefully, he will have less trouble now.  The vet said that constipation is not uncommon with hand fed babies...I read that also on the web...He said he looks great...and said he is gigantic.  He wanted to know if Megan mated with a shepherd....he couldn't believe it was a 4 pound yorkie...

9/12/05 update

Just got back from the Dr. with Megan and Sean...we thought Megan could resume her HW treatment but she now has a bronchial thing going on.  She is on antibiotics and theofalin (sp?) for two weeks.  We will try again then...Prayers for her, please.  She has to get well enough to go back on the HW treatment.

The good news is...Sean now weighs 8 oz...my scale kept weighing him at 5 oz and he looked like an awfully big guy for just 5 oz...Needless to say this scale will be going back...lol.  The vet says he looks terrific and just keep doin' what I'm doin'

9/9/05 update

Sean is eating like a little trooper...he is almost at 5 ounces and is eating about a tablespoon and a half of formula a day.  He still has poopy problems, but he does go at least once a day...sometimes twice.  At least he is no longer constipated.  His eyes still are not open, but maybe in a few days.

Megan, is once again eating and keeping her food down.  I have been feeding her three meals a day trying to put some weight on her.  She looks a little better, but is still pretty thin...She seems to show very little interest in Sean...I will sit next to her when I feed him.  She will give him a few licks and then turns around and snuggles up next to me.  I think she knows he is being taken care of...

Thanks everyone for your prayers and concerns...things are looking good!

8/20 update

I took Megan to the vet yesterday and she has two live puppies. You could see the spines and they seem to be ok. The vet said that they were big and didn't see a third, but it was possible.

Megan is doing fine, except with storms and of course we have had one a day since she arrived. They are predicted every day next week also. It stresses her out so....But I think if she is this crazed with storms having babies will be a piece of cake. The vet is hoping she will have them here, because it will cause less stress on her. He said if anything were to start going wrong, I would still have time to get her to the hospital...we think she is due in 10 to 15 days...

The vet increased her food to four large feedings a day. He wants her to gain more weight than the 12 ounces she gained in a week.

I have set up her whelping area and she went right to the box and stays in there pretty much. I just want it safe for her and for her babies, so I have the ex-pen around that. I am going to look for a playpen Tuesday, so when I go to work they can stay in
my room in that. I don't want the other dogs bothering her or her babies.

Will keep everyone updated as I know anything...

8/10 update

Leslie foster mom just called me and Megan is PREGNANT!!!! There is really only a little bit of fluid- she is bloated because she is pregnant!! The vet at the hospital is calling and conferring with Leslie's regular vet. Megan seems to be pushing and the pups are so small they couldn't even be seen on a regular x-ray.

I have no idea what the heartworm treatment may have done to the puppies. There are 3 or 4 puppies. At this point it doesn't seem likely that Megan would be able to carry these puppies to term. If she keeps pushing and can't deliver the babies on her own, then they may have to do a Caesarean.

Please keep this little lady in your prayers........

Hi, I’m Megan, I’m a 7 or 8 year old female Yorkshire Terrier weighing 7 pounds 15 ozs.  I’ve been freed from a mill and a life of having babies and more babies, I don’t have to do that anymore and I’m so glad. If you look at one of my pictures, you can see that I’ve had LOTS of babies.

I’ve had all my shots. I wasn’t like Scooter and I didn’t have any worms or ear mites, but I have heartworms too. I’m going to be treated for my heartworms before I am spay because I already have a cough and they want to get rid of those nasty heartworms before I’m spayed.

I’m a sweet little girl, very gentle, I like to be petted and will come up to you if you sit on my level. Antie Jackie had a hard time getting my picture, she didn’t do a very good job of it. Cassie, told me to keep turning my head so Antie Jackie couldn’t get it, I think I did a good job at that.

Foster Mom Leslie will keep you updated on me, but if you think you could love me, I’ll love you back lots. My hair is cut pretty short right now, but Antie Jackie says when it grows out, I’ll be a beautiful yorkie girl.
