Update on Rat Terriers Meg and Saffie (Former Precious)
They have been home for 6 months. They have changed so much . That first month was terrifying for all of us. Meg shook with fear and stiffened up whenever I came near her. Saffie cowered with fear and even bit on one occasion. Saffie had to undergo heartworm treatment. That is when I discovered how smart she is. No matter what plan I hatched to keep her confined and quiet during the treatment, she was able to outsmart me in a matter of hours. I was able to keep her quiet by freezing dog cookies and peanut butter into kong toys. The frozen pupsicle kept her occupied for hours. I can report that Saffie is doing well. She and Meg run and play in the yard like puppies. Meg has a down stoop in back and walks with a funny gait (the vet thought she was kept in a cage that may have been too short for her at some point) but she runs like and Olympic athlete. They are both sweet and loving dogs. They are housetrained, love to eat and know the sit command. Fur sister Bubbles was not very accepting of them initially. Now they love patrolling the yard for squirrels and rabbits from high atop their couch throne in the living room window. They will walk on leashes but Saffie won’t potty on the leash. Meg loves hiking in the woods with Bubbles. Meg learned the unwritten rule of leaving a single drop of pee on every tree in the woods. I have been supplementing their food and their coats have a beautiful sheen. Meg’s confidence is growing and Saffie’s wild ways are tapering off. I can’t imagine my life without them. They seem so appreciative and loving in ways that are different from the “normal” dog Bubbles. In fact, I would say that Meg and Saffie are much better behaved than Bubbles. It is truly hard to describe this bond with my mill babies but it is a bond I thank the Lord for every night in my prayers. I see that a few of the other ratties from the Halloween 2003 rescue are still with the fostermoms. I hope someone will open their home to these wonderful little babes. They are not perfect and they are not purebred. But you could not ask for a bigger heart nor a bigger personality in a dog. |
